The IEDR is the registry for .ie Internet Domain Names and maintains the database of .ie registered Internet names. The IEDR (www.iedr.ie) is an independent not-for-profit organisation that manages the .ie country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) namespace in the public interest of the Irish and global Internet communities.

The IEDR perform the following tasks:-

  • Operate the DNS for the .ie namespace
    • The Domain Name System (DNS) is the system that translates Internet domain names into IP numbers. A DNS Server is a server that performs this kind of translation.
  • Administer the .ie Database
    • the database associates Internet resources (addresses, domain names etc) to legal bodies (personified as contacts).
  • Update the ccTLD zone server
    • .ie is a low volume, low churn zone, currently two reloads / rebuilds per day are generally considered sufficient.
  • Implement technical advances
    • Organise and manage all technical aspects related to the registration.
  • Operate registry processes
    • for new registrations, renewals, billing agent transfers, domain contact and hosting modifications.
  • Operate administrative processes
    • for billing, renewals, credit control and cash collection.
  • Protect registrants from deletion or suspension errors
    • Operate a formal Deletion process for non-renewed domains, with appropriate fail safes.
  • Facilitate a Dispute Resolution Process (DRP)
    • in conjunction with WIPO
  • Operate the "directory" or lookup services for .ie domain
    • Whois and DNS, with rate-limiting to protect registrants from spam
  • Implement policies
    • taking account of the rights and obligations of registrants, Registrars
  • Provide additional services
    • in accordance with market demand and technical developments (ENUM, IDN, IPv6 etc)
  • Liaise with representative industry groups such as ISPAI and IIA
  • Promote the registration and continued use of .ie domains
    • through initiatives with the Local Internet Community
  • The IEDR is a member of CENTR, the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries. In line with the Best Practice Principles of IANA, ICANN and CENTR, the IEDR is committed to the concept of administering .ie throughout the 32 counties of Ireland in an open and transparent manner.
