When can I get one?
1 and 2 letter .ie domains will soon be available to anybody to register. In the domain trade we call this General Availability (GA) which will launch at 11 am, this coming Monday, 16th May 2016.
Why should I want one?
These are short, memorable and catchy names that your customers will easily remember. They can also help you to build an instantly memorable brand both online and offline.
For example, a company or organisation whose name is regularly abbreviated would be very interested in getting a 2 letter domain. Think of the political parties who regularly use the shortened version of their names – Fine Gael (FG), Fianna Fáil (FF) and companies like Volkswagen (VW) or the Automobile Association (AA).
There are 562 possible combinations still available at the moment so chances are the one you want is still available. Be warned, we did offer them to trademark holders first. We then held an auction for premium names with some selling for over five figure sums. We’ve also restricted some that may lead to confusion for consumers such as ie.ie etc. All this means that some of the ones you may have your eye on could already be gone but there are still lots of options to choose from.
How do I get one?
Contact your accredited Registrar as soon as you can. From Monday these .ie domain names can be bought in the exact same way as other .ie domains. You’ll still need to prove your connection to Ireland. (Check out our post with our top tips for doing this quickly and easily here).
Once you’ve proven your connection to Ireland these 1 and 2 letter domains will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from Monday 16th May. Contact your accredited Registrar who will be able to help you apply for the one you want quickly and easily.
