.ie Quarterly Registrations Exceed 10,000 for the First Time
– Registrations increase 5.5% Quarter-on-Quarter –
The IE Domain Registry (IEDR), the managed registry for Ireland’s official internet address .ie today reported that registrations for Ireland’s top level domain exceeded 10,000 in a three month period for the first time. Registrations for Quarter 1 2011 were 10,183 which represents a 5.5% increase on the corresponding quarter last year and an 18.5% increase on registrations in the last quarter of 2010. The total number of .ie domains now stands at 160,000.
The IEDR’s quarterly registrations report reveals steady demand from Irish sole traders and limited companies, that together account for over 80% of new registrants for the trusted .ie namespace, which is currently ranked as the fourth safest domain in the world by the recently published McAfee global survey of domains. The .ie domain has been consistently ranked in the top five safest top level country domains since the annual survey was first published in 2007.
Notwithstanding the strong growth in domain registrations, opportunities for future growth remain for SMEs that have a web presence and those yet to register a domain. In late last year the IEDR published a report which found that only two thirds of Irish businesses have a web presence and just 21 per cent of these had any kind of e-commerce functionality. As businesses continue to struggle with challenging trading conditions there are significant on-line opportunities that businesses can take advantage of.
Commenting on the .ie registration figures for the year to date, Mr. David Curtin, Chief Executive of the IE Domain Registry, said “It’s encouraging to see that the first quarter of 2011 has shown strong growth in .ie domain registrations. A lot of work has been done by the IEDR in investing in the right technology to maintain the safety, security and resilience of the .ie domain infrastructure, while the ongoing efforts of our registrars have contributed significantly to the promotion of .ie. The .ie namespace provides an established, trusted domain name through which start-ups and entrepreneurs can bring their goods and services to market and win consumer confidence. The IEDR is committed to maintaining the integrity, affordability and resilience of this vital platform for Irish e-commerce.”
On businesses not exploiting the full potential of online sales, Mr. Curtin added: “When the IEDR studied the extent of Irish business’ presence online we were surprised to learn that only two thirds of Irish businesses have a web presence and just 21 per cent of these had any kind of e-commerce functionality. This means that there are considerable online sales opportunities that Irish businesses are missing out on. As businesses continue to struggle with challenging trading conditions I would encourage them to investigate the benefits of marketing and selling online. A fully transactional website can be put in place for a fraction of the cost of the annual rent of a high street retail unit – yet a website shop front can be seen by potential customers anywhere in the world.”
