Modify a domain

This page provides you with the information you need should you wish to modify your domain name by updating any of your domain records.

Update Administrative Contact

The Administrative Contact for each .ie domain must be representative of the holder of the domain name.

If your domain is registered through an Accredited .ie Registrar, your Registrar may require you to carry out any changes through them. Please check with your Registrar to be sure your modification request is sent to the right place.

For domains registered to an individual, the holder must be the Administrative Contact. For domains registered to companies, clubs, or other organisations, the Administrative Contact must be a member of the organisation. The Administrative Contact can be changed if an individual leaves an organisation or for various other reasons.

To change the Administrative Contact listed on your domain the IEDR will need you to submit a  document signed by the current Administrative Contact on their letterhead. This letter must state:

“I authorise the change of Administrative Contact for the domain from (previous Administrative Contact name) to (new Administrative Contact name + email address).”

If the previous Administrative Contact is no longer with the organisation that owns the domain name, or is no longer responsible for the domain registration, please also state this on the authorisation letter, and instead have the new Administrative Contact sign the document. Transfer Billing Contact

The Billing Contact of a .ie domain is the individual or company that handles payment of the initial registration fee and the annual renewal fees for the domain.

The IEDR invoices the Billing Contact each year for the renewal fee of your domain name. If you registered your .ie domain through one of our Accredited .ie Registrars then they are the Billing Contact for your domain.

To transfer your domain name to a new .ie accredited Registrar, you will need an authorisation code (Authcode).  The Authcode is a unique randomly generated code, assigned to your domain name, which is used to securely authorise your transfer.  Once you are in receipt of your Authcode please provide this to your new .ie Accredited Registrar who will perform the transfer on your behalf.

You can request your Authcode:

1)      From your current .ie Accredited Registrar.

2)      Directly from the designated .ie online portal. Please note you will require your username (Admin Contact NIC Handle, e.g. ABC123-IEDR) and the email address held on the IEDR database that is assigned to this username.  The Authcode will be directly emailed to this address only.  If you have forgotten your username and/or *email address, please in the first instance contact your current Registrar or alternatively contact IEDR’s Registration Services Team directly by telephone at +353 (1) 2365400 (Option 1) who will assist you in obtaining your code.

3)      Direct request to IEDRs Registration Services Team – the team will generate the code on your behalf.  The Authcode will be sent directly to the email address assigned to the Admin Contact on the domain name.  Please note IEDR will not give out Authcodes by telephone.

*If you require your email address to be updated the Admin Contact assigned to the domain name needs to send the IEDR a signed request by email to

Please Note: All transfers to another Billing Contact require a renewal payment for the domain that is to be transferred.

Update Technical Contact

If your domain is registered through an Accredited .ie Registrar, your Registrar may require you to carry out any changes through them. Please check with your Registrar to be sure your modification request is sent to the right place. The appointed Administrative or Billing Contact for your domain will need to contact our Registration Services team if you require a change to your Technical Contact information. Please email us at or call us on 01-2365400 to speak to a member of the team.

Changing Domain Name Holder

You can reassign “ownership” of your domain to someone else who meets our registration criteria at any time. In legal terms, you are reassigning the legal “right to use” the domain.

How this is done depends on why you’re changing the domain holder details.

Buying, taking over, restructuring, or merging a business

To reassign the domain holder details in these instances, you’ll need to provide the following:

1. Contact your Registrar, and provide them with a signed document on headed paper from the current Administrative Contact. This letter must include a signed declaration that the registrant change is taking place as part of a transaction to buy/ take over/ restructure/ merge a business, and must also state that you authorise the cancellation of the specified domain name in order to reassign it to the future owner.

2. Information from the future domain owner showing their connection to Ireland, and proof of personal/commercial identity, as per the IEDR’s registration policies. Please refer to our Registration Requirements page for more information.

3. The future owner must also provide their contact details to be recorded as the new Administrative Contact.

The above steps should be completed at the same time to avoid the possibility of the domain being cancelled. The IEDR must ensure that the future domain owner has supplied all necessary requirements to re-assign the domain.

Changing the Domain Holder for any other reason

You should follow the process outlined here, which was introduced to support all other domain holder changes, including (but not limited to) the sale of the domain.

Update Nameservers

A minimum of 2 nameservers that are set up to host your domain must be included in your domain application. For example, the nameserver record for looks like:


These nameservers can be changed at any stage however, any changes made are the responsibility of the Administrative Contact (the appointed representative of the domain holder) or their designated Technical or Billing Contact.
