In order to be considered eligible for participation in Sunrise, an applicant must hold one of the following, which should also be fully registered:
- Irish Trademark
- European Community Trademark
- International Trademark (designating Ireland)
- UK Trademark (where the registered company address on the relevant Trademark database is located within the island of Ireland).
All applicants will be required to provide a copy of their Trademark certificate/Trademark number, which will be verified by the IEDR’s Registrations Department.
All rights must have been obtained prior to July 30th, 2014.
The domain name that is applied for must be identical to all text or word elements contained in the eligible Trademark that is used to support the application.
The recorded name of the Trademark must be an identical match to the reported name, as long as the name of the Trademark includes letters, words, numerals, keyboard signs, and punctuation marks (“Characters”) that are: predominant, clearly separable or distinguishable from the device element and in the same order they appear in the mark.
A domain name containing a plural version of the mark is not considered to be an identical match, and such a mark will not be considered eligible during Sunrise.
If the Trademark Holder’s registered mark includes one or more spaces between letters, the spaces should be removed. If the Trademark Holder’s registered mark includes a special character (such as -, @, !, §, %, ^, © or &), these characters should be omitted.
NOTE: In the event that there is any doubt surrounding the eligibility of the Trademark, the decision will be referred to external specialists with thorough knowledge of both national and regional Trademark law.
Examples
If the Trademark Holder’s registered mark is AB, then the domain name string that is applicable must be AB for it to be deemed an identical match.
If the Trademark Holder’s registered mark is “A&E”, the “&” is deemed a special character that cannot be represented in a domain name string. As such, it will be omitted, and the domain name label that would be considered as applicable could be “AE”.
If a Trademark Holder’s registered mark is áé, the trademark would not be eligible to participate in Sunrise, but would be during Landrush or General Availability, provided the domain has not already been registered.
Domain Name Characters
The characters which may be used in a domain name are the 26 letters (A-Z) of the Roman alphabet without regard to upper- or lower-case, the 10 digits (0-9) and the hyphen (-). The hyphen may not be used as the initial or final character of a label. Names with “-” on the third and the fourth position may not be used.
Non-refundable Application Fee
Please be advised that application fees are strictly non-refundable.
If you wish to verify your eligibility before submitting an application, please contact 1-2letter@iedr.ie with your Trademark information (type and number), and a member of the Registrations Team will review this for you.
Direct Applicants
The IEDR always recommends submitting your application through an accredited .ie Registrar.
However, if you are a Direct Registrant with the IEDR, please note that the non-refundable application fee is €499 (ex VAT), and must be paid directly to the IEDR Accounts Department after submitting your application through https://2letterportal.iedr.ie/.
If you have any queries regarding your application submission, or wish to apply using an email template instead of the online portal, please email 1-2letter@iedr.ie for further information.
Don’t hold an eligible Trademark?
If you do not hold an eligible trademark for participation in Sunrise, you may still be able to apply for any remaining one- or two-letter .ie domains during our second registration phase, Landrush, which will run in February 2016. Under this phase, all applicants who meet the standard registration criteria of the IEDR can apply, and this should again be done through any of the participating .ie Registrars listed above.
