What is a .ie domain

A .ie domain name is effectively a way of showing that your website is targeted at the Irish market. It’s Ireland’s online address.

All computers connected to the Internet have unique numerical addresses to make sure that information is delivered to the right place. The domain name system (DNS) changes these numerical addresses of computers into user-friendly domain names to make it easier to find the information you are looking for on the Internet. In the same way in which “Ireland” as a postal address and the “353″ phone prefix show where you are located, the Internet address of .ie lets people know that you are based in, or from, Ireland. Domain names identify particular web pages. For example, in the website address http://www.why.ie the domain name is why.ie. Domain names are also used in e-mail addresses, for example, firstname.lastname@why.ie.

A  domain name consists of a number of labels each separated from the next by a dot (period). The characters which may be used in a label are the 26 letters (A-Z) of the Roman alphabet without regard to upper or lower-case, the 10 digits (0-9) and the hyphen (-). The hyphen may not be used as the initial or final character of a domain. A domain may be up to 63 characters in length, and be at least three characters long, unless one of the characters is a digit, in which case it can be two characters long. The entire domain name, including the separating dots, must be no longer than 255 characters.

With .com domains, anybody can register any name as long as it is not already taken. In contrast .ie requires a connection with the island of Ireland. Every .ie registration is checked by our Registration Services Team to ensure that it has a connection to Ireland.

A .ie domain name:

  • Lets customers know that you are Irish.
  • Is managed to provide your customers with the security that you are who you say you are.
  • Is more likely to be available than a similar .com
  • Will appear higher in Google search results for people searching in Ireland than other domains due to automatic geotargeting
